About Courtney
Courtney has been teaching yoga since 2013. She is recognized by Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 500 and YACEP. She earned her 200-hour yoga teaching certificate in 2013 from Black Swan Yoga (Austin, TX) and her 300-hour teaching certificate in 2021 (Practice Yoga Austin). She has also studied Foundations of Ayurveda, meditation, and Yin and Restorative Yoga.
Courtney’s first yoga experience was in 2001 in New Orleans after having finished college where she studied Sanskrit and Hinduism among other subjects. She took very little notice of yoga for the next 10 years but then was hooked. “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.”
Her vinyasa-based classes are upbeat with music to match, always ending in a few restorative poses to recenter yourself and realign with the reason why you stepped on your mat. She enjoys teaching students of all levels and is particularly interested in sharing proper alignment with beginners.
Courtney’s teaching style is alignment-focused and she loves teaching people who are looking to explore movement and learn more about themselves through yoga. As a self-proclaimed athlete (running and hiking - Appalachian Trail Thru-Hiker Class of 2015), Courtney encourages safety and observation to create a sustainable practice.
Her own yoga practice provides her with a sense of home and belonging. It is ever changing and available. When painfully ill, her practice was there for her. Through heartbreak, elation, numbness, and growth, her practice was there. “I allow myself to surrender in my practice.”
In addition to teaching public classes virtually and in person, Courtney also teaches private individual and small group classes. These can be arranged in the student's home or another preferred location as well as virtually.
Courtney has taught various styles of yoga and workshops in Washington, DC; Richmond, VA; Austin, TX; and along the Appalachian Trail.
She currently lives and teaches in Portland, OR.
From a student:
l was just reading your "about" page and thought you might want to add something to it about how fluid and satisfying your sequences are. You are very skilled at creating sequences that flow in a way that matches the body's logic; if I feel "done" holding whatever pose we are in, my body often moves automatically into the next pose, sometimes just before you direct us to do so. You really can't underestimate the power of that ability. I feel like it helps deepen the practice by maintaining connection to feeling my breath and to the rhythm of breathing, deepens connection to my body in terms of alignment, sensation, stability, strength, flexibility, moving through each moment grounded in presence. And it enables the peaceful, centering connection to Self and presence/present moment as well. It helps me feel at home in my body. I have taken many classes with many teachers over many years (24 years, next year!), and I am always most satisfied when the poses follow each other in a way that feels just right for my body. I just wanted to recognize you again for this skill, because it makes practicing with you so satisfying and fun! It feels just right! And the balance of ease and challenge also feels good. I'm so grateful to have your gifted teaching accessible even tho we are far apart geographically. And your sweet and joyful spirit is an absolute delight as well, of course. Thank you! Namasté!
